Your Voice Matters: How One Girl Sparked a Movement!

Writer: DanielleDanielle

So, let’s talk about something really important—using our voices. As mums, we want our girls to know that what they think, feel, and say matters.

But let’s be honest, speaking up isn’t always easy. Whether it’s raising a hand in class, standing up for a friend, or sharing an opinion, confidence in using your voice takes practice.

That’s exactly why this month in the Serenity For Girls Academy, we’re diving into the theme Your Voice Matters—inspired by young change-makers who refused to stay silent. This is even more fitting as it is also International Women's Day on the 8th March.

Meet Marley Dias: The Girl Who Changed Bookshelves

I want to introduce you to Marley Dias. If you haven’t heard of her, now's your chance!

At just 11 years old, Marley realised something was missing in her school reading list—stories about Black girls. She kept reading book after book about white boys and their dogs (no shade to those stories, but where was the diversity?!). Instead of just complaining about it, she took action and launched #1000BlackGirlBooks—a campaign to collect and donate 1,000 books featuring Black girls as main characters.

What started as a small idea grew into a global movement. Marley’s campaign caught the attention of major media outlets, publishers, and even Michelle Obama! She not only reached her goal but far exceeded it, collecting over 13,000 books and sparking a much-needed conversation about diversity in literature.

And here’s the best part—she didn’t stop there. Marley went on to write her own book, "Marley Dias Gets It Done: And So Can You!", encouraging other young people to take action on the things they care about.

What Our Girls Can Learn from Marley

Marley’s story is proof that age doesn’t define impact. You don’t have to wait until you’re older to make a difference. Your voice is powerful right now. Whether it’s standing up for what’s right, sharing an idea, or expressing how you feel—it matters.

Inside this month’s Your Voice Matters workshop, we’ll be helping girls:

  • To find their voice with confidence

  • To help her to explore what matters to them and what shes passionate about?

  • We will be looking at some other girls/women who have used their voice to make a change just like Marley

And because we love a good challenge, the girls will also have the chance to write and share their own mini speech on something they feel strongly about—just like Marley did!

So basically we're helping our girls to raise a generation of confident voices

Our girls have incredible things to say. Sometimes, they just need that little nudge to believe their words deserve to be heard. So let’s give them that space. Let’s encourage their ideas, celebrate their courage, and remind them that their voices can change the world.
